Birmingham Sister City Commission is in search of a strategic thinker and collaborative leader who is a self-starter and finisher to serve as the Executive Director for our organization.
Who We Are
The Birmingham Sister Cities Commission (BSC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering international and intercultural relationships as well as community relations in order to facilitate foreign direct investment and economic development in Birmingham, Alabama. It is our belief that intercultural understanding and diverse person to person communication expands the potential for growth and ideas.
Who You Are
The Executive Director (ED) will serve as the conduit between our operations and each of our citizen-led Country Committees to help organize events and exchanges between Birmingham and our Sister Cities abroad. The position will report to the board of directors.
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)
The successful Executive Director candidate will collaborate with our board of directors and committee chairs to strategically connect the dots that drive our mission forward and enhance our visibility by promoting BSC and our programs.
Operations & Program Management
Ensure board members, program chairs and volunteers are working in support of our vision, mission, and goals
Lead the process to develop BSC’s first strategic plan
Develop and track the budget and manage fiscal operations of the organization
Develop and implement tools including checklist and guidelines to evaluate BSC programs
Establish systems and processes to track program performance and measure the impact, including monthly and annual reporting
Develop relationships within the Sister City framework to adapt and replicate successful models and best practices
Community & Partner Engagement
Serve as Birmingham’s diplomat to the world and BSC’s primary community liaison, exhibiting confidence as the organization’s spokesperson and face of BSC
Represent and establish relationships with allies, partners, elected officials, grantees, funders, and other cities with Sister Cities programs.
Develop and maintain a monthly calendar of events by soliciting events, news, and engaging stories from board members and committee chairs
Growth & Development
In conjunction with the board of directors, create and implement a multi-year donor-development and fundraising plan that supports the organizations’ priorities, goals and objectives
Explore economic opportunities by cultivating a diverse set of funding streams
Create and implement marketing and public relations strategies to enhance awareness of BSC’s mission and programs
What You Bring (Key Qualifications)
To perform the Executive Director role, our successful candidate will have the following education, skills, knowledge, and experiences.
3-5 years of experience with progressive responsibility in a business environment
BS degree, ideally in international relations or business. Certification in nonprofit management a plus
Confident, charismatic presence, with ease in front of a camera for media appearances
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Expertise in building, maintaining and working in diverse coalitions
Proven network and contacts in donor and business communities
Must have the ability to travel domestically and internationally as required
What We’ll Offer
$50,000 Annual Contract – Flexible / Remote work.
