Rise Up! How Women Can Be Seen (And Heard) At The Office

I’ve been in the HR industry for over 20 years, and it still amazes me about the struggles that women still go through in the workplace. Strides have been made when it comes to including women in pivotal C-suite roles and I’m glad about that. But women are still underpaid in comparison to their male counterparts and can be overlooked for promotions.

A lot of women who I have coached over the years complain about these circumstances and are frustrated with the status quo. Ladies, I’m about to tell you something that you already know but need to hear…

In order for you go get ahead, you are gonna have to RISE UP! And that means getting out of the cubicle, stand front and center in front of your colleagues, and letting it be known that you are valuable. Nobody is going to give you a raise until you ask for it. No one is going to give you a promotion unless you make a business case as to why you are the perfect candidate for the position. Don’t wait for the recognition to come to you. You gotta go after it!

“But Melva, isn’t that kind of posturing a turnoff?” It can be if you go about it in the wrong way. A strength that women have and can be underutilized is our nurturing nature. Believe it or not, women can make fantastic managers because of this trait. Our intuition allows us to empathize with our team and we are able to be better diplomats. Basically, it isn’t bragging if you are utilizing your natural strengths in a way that is benefiting your company and the team. But you can’t be shy about talking about your achievements in the right setting or with the right kind of influencers in your company.

Confidence in yourself and your abilities is such a draw to people. Your inner and outer confidence demonstrate leadership abilities and your capability to grow within the company. Don’t be afraid to show your superiors why you deserve that promotion. And don’t shy away about speaking up for your right for advancement.

This is YOUR year to shine! Now go #PutInTheWork.
