A new sports management service has hit the business scene in Birmingham.

Tate & Associates has expanded with the launch of Tate Sports Strategies. The entity is a new division of the consulting firm that aims to benefit athletes, coaches and sports organizations.

CEO Melva Tate named her daughter, Danielle Tate — a previous BBJ Woman to Watch — vice president of the new division.

“Danielle brings both academic and industry credentials to the table, with degrees in sport administration from Louisiana State University and sport management from the University of Alabama, plus professional experience at D1 athletic departments, conference offices, nonprofits and sports-tech firms,” she said. “Together, we’re combining experience and energy to expand services like leadership development, Title IX compliance support and career coaching for athletes and sports institutions.”

The firm will provide staff development and compliance training for professional sports teams, executive coaching for leaders in professional sports organizations, team building and communication workshops for youth, collegiate and professional teams; DEI training; Title VII and Title IX training for colleges and universities; independent Title VII and Title IX investigations involving athletes and athletic staff; executive search support for high-profile university athletic leadership roles and career transition coaching for former professional athletes launching second careers.

The Tates will continue expanding the business by bringing on one additional consultant with a strong background in sports and player marketing. That role will help serve the growing demand for NIL education, athlete branding and institutional support services. The company will also add to its ranks in the support and client services realm as growth continues.

“By 2026, we plan to open two brick-and-mortar locations: one in Birmingham, where the company is headquartered, and one in Houston, Texas, which is an emerging hub for sports innovation and athlete development,” Melva Tate said. “These spaces will be designed to support client meetings, athlete workshops and collaborative consulting work.”

And the mother-daughter duo might not stop at Alabama and Texas.

“While we’ve already worked with sports organizations across the U.S., the official launch of Tate Sports Strategies formalizes our intention to grow into new markets,” Melva Tate said. “We’re especially targeting partnerships in Texas, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana, where we already have strong relationships and growing demand from college athletics and sports nonprofits.”
